Lofty Castle by Finickii Lofty Castle by Finickii
A hybrid 'I've-Been-Wanting-To-Do-This-Fanart-Forever' slash introductory header for an upcoming article about the Spyro trilogy I'm writing for Femhype. I'll link to it in my journal when it goes up next week.

God, I loved these games.

My childhood!
In your awesome painterly style
Everything looks great, but I especially love the legs - it really looks like a frame from a realistic run cycle.

This is so beautiful. All of the highlights and shadows are spot on and those scales are just downright stunning. :wow: I'm in love with your art skills!

Here's a beyoot! The lighting is coming from the front really works well--really an unusual light source. Man, this is so original and yet so familiar at the same time. =D

I always loved Lofty Castle in particular. It's something about the whole environment and the music! Nostalgiaaaaa.

Quick question. Do you apply the general highlights and shading on the body before or after you color in the scales?

I'm seeing a lot of people say that and I'm glad-it really is a stunning level, even more so than some AAA titles I've picked up.

Since scales are so finely detailed, I leave them for last. I bulk out the body with the appropriate light and shadow, then sort of etch the scales in.

I'll never get tired of these! So many memories. One look at this and the Lofty castle theme is already playing in my head (Thank you, Stuart Copeland!)

Wow! this is incredible. I absolutely love the levels in the Dream Weavers world and you have made it even more majestic: the gems, Sparx, Spyro the detail and the awesome reference to tLoS(celestial moons) wow!.
The only thing here that is lacking is a crystal dragon statue but regardless, this is amazing. I LOVE IT!!!!

I looked it up but can't seem to find it: what's tLoS? Those moons are also part of Lofty Castle.

And I wanted to add a statue, but it seemed busy enough as it is. Next time!

My mistake, I haven't played the first game in years so I must have forgotten the background design of that level.
Anyway, TLoS or 'The Legend of Spyro' was a trilogy of games each named: 'a New Beginning', 'the Eternal Night', 'Dawn of the dragon' from 2006 to 2008 on Playstation 2 and then PlayStation 3 for the third game. It's setting had nothing to do with the original series and had a slightly different gameplay altogether. If you have ever seen any Spyro fan art where a black dragoness character named 'Cynder' keeps turning up, TLoS is what she is from.
Many Spyro fans enjoyed these games, however, it was more story orientated than the original series and had a darker them to it too; which I think works really well for the Spyro franchise.
I hope that clears a few things up, there should be enough info there for an effective search.

woah late response

I never played those ones! I got pretty fed up with Enter The Dragonfly as a kid because I wasn't fond of the new direction and all but swore myself off of new Spyro games, ha ha. Though I was curious about the Gameboy Advance ones.

Cynder has a really cute design. I've thought of drawing her.

Yes Cynder does look cute. Her character is even better.

Enter the Dragonfly is the worst game in the whole series. It is not only a bad Spyro game, it is quite laiterally the worst video game in the world. You shouldn't judge the following games just because of that one terrible game. The game to follow up afterwards; 'A heros' Tale' is much better. It was very fun the first time I played it.

I still recommend you play the Legend of Spyro games. They may be different from the classic series but they have an awesome take on the purple dragon as the story has dark theme running through it. Also, the voice acting is pretty cool as well because they are well known actors. Start with 'A new Beginning' , it may be a linear game but god it was mystical and fun. Only critizism of it is some of the fights get a bit monotonous.

Anyway, your drawings are magnificent.

Right? I want to do a few more Spyro levels for fun and this one took absolute precedence.

Lofty Castle has it all. I'd love to see it recreated with modern graphics.

Yes, that would be amazing. In fact, I would welcome a remastered/remake of the classic trilogy of Spyro the dragon. I'm sure that it would sell big so long as they kept close to the source material.
